United received a let-off in the 15th minute when Elliot Newby blazed a penalty wide, only for Connor Hall to convert from the spot two minutes later.
Chorley's victory was wrapped up in the 34th minute when Scott Leather lashed home from a corner and despite United delivering a string of telling crosses, they were unable to find a route back into proceedings.
